A simple and delicious recipe for homemade French bread with a crispy crust and soft interior, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let this sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir it until it forms a dough.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Punch down the dough and shape it into a long loaf.
  8. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet or baguette pan.
  9. Let it rise again for 30 minutes.
  10. Make several slashes on the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  12. Allow it to cool before slicing.

Notes

Use warm water to activate the yeast without killing it. For a crunchier crust, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
