Delightful crispy onion petals that are perfect for snacking or serving at parties, paired with a zesty dipping sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions (like Vidalia)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Optional: ranch or blooming onion dipping sauce

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the onions into bite-sized petals. Separate the layers and set them aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne (if using).
  3. Pour buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip each onion petal into the buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture, coating well.
  4. Place the coated onion bites on a baking sheet and let them rest for 10–15 minutes for the coating to stick.
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the onion bites in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per batch. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan.
  7. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm with your choice of dipping sauce.

Notes

Ensure the oil is hot enough for a crispy crust. For a twist, add cheese or herbs to the flour mixture.
